Understanding Our Courses
The courses we offer teach the theory component of refrigeration and they are one part of the total mandatory requirements and preparation prior to anyone challenging a Technical Safety BC (TSBC) – formerly known as the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) -examination. These courses are designed to prepare personnel wishing to work in British Columbia (and Inter-Provincially where observed) with Industrial Refrigeration equipment at various plants and facilities. These include Ice Arenas, Curling Clubs, Cold Storage Facilities, Process Plants and others. Courses are designed for Operators, Mechanics and Maintenance persons, Zamboni drivers, Arena Attendants, and staff in the Janitorial fields.
Our courses are approved by TSBC and a prerequisite to writing TSBC examinations. There are other prerequisites, such as Qualifying Time and In-house training, that are required before obtaining the final TSBC certificate. It is best to STEP from the RSA to the IFO, and then to the RO, but that approach is not mandatory. You may begin with either of the courses without taking the previous courses. Qualifying Time (Firing Time) requirements increase with each technology.
Please note:
In our Program, the Ice Facility Operator (IFO) course is also the “WEEK 1” of the Refrigeration Operator’s course. It is approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC) and conforms to their standards and syllabus. In the IFO & RO courses, we study Reference Material that is Open Book and permitted in the TSBC exam. Our quotes have line items showing both Reference Materials. If you already have any of the proper current Reference Materials let us know and we’ll remove those line items.

Fun Question
What is the difference between an RO course and an RPO course.
Answer: Nothing. RO stands for Refrigeration Operator and RPO stands for Refrigeration Plant Operator and they are both the same and can be used mutually or interchangeably.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the price for these courses?
The RSA, IFO, and the RPO courses’s prices are dependant upon a candidate’s inventory of manuals. If you can borrow them from a friend you can save $$$. The Assessment (phone chat) by our staff can assist with providing a proper Quote for you to Approve. Then we can Invoice you for the amount. We have a No Refund policy.
Do I have to take the courses in order?
We recommend taking the RSA one-day course first, then the IFO and RPO courses. You can schedule these courses over a period of time that works for you. We are already scheduling for future dates so please fill out our form today and we will give you a call to better understanding your date preferences.
What if I forgot the information I had learned in a past course before I sign up for the exam?
We highly recommend taking these courses more than once so that you are fully prepared for the exam.
Can I organize a course with Glenn McQuarrie Enterprises in my city or facility?
Absolutely! Glenn McQuarrie currently provides courses across Western Canada. A course at any location can be offered to organizations, municipalities, or even individuals working in groups, looking to certify multiple employees or outside candidates without the added cost or time of sending them or traveling to another city. If you’re interested, simply contact us to discuss your group size, location, and preferred course dates. We can send you a Quote. We’ll coordinate a convenient schedule and ensure the necessary course materials are ready for everyone. Hosting a course locally ensures everyone gets certified efficiently and affordably.
Why do employers require refrigeration certifications for their staff?
Employers require certifications for legal compliance, workplace safety, and operational reliability. In British Columbia, Technical Safety BC (TSBC) mandates specific certifications for anyone working in or around industrial refrigeration. Certified staff understand emergency shutdown procedures, equipment safety protocols, and how to minimize risks in refrigeration environments. These credentials not only protect the public and employees, but the facilities as well. This demonstrates due diligence and professionalism to insurers and regulatory bodies also. Persons outside of an organization can add this asset to their resume as a viable reason for hire.
What kind of facilities and staff benefit from your courses?
Facilities such as ice arenas, curling clubs, food processing plants, and cold storage warehouses may benefit. Ideal participants include arena attendants, building operators, maintenance personnel, and warehouse employees responsible for safe facility operations.
