Refrigeration Safety Awareness
This course is for those wishing to obtain a
Refrigeration Safety Awareness certificate.
It is a B.C. wide industry standard of instruction approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC), formerly known as the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) and conforms to standards created by TSBC.
This course is a requirement for personnel working in British Columbia in an Industrial Refrigeration Plant at various facilities such as Ice Arenas, Curling Clubs, Cold Storage Facilities, and Process Plants. This usually includes Maintenance persons, Zamboni drivers, and Arena Attendants.
A Refrigeration Safety Awareness certificate enables the holder to be able to monitor the refrigeration plant named on the certificate of qualification with a total plant capacity of 1,000 kW or less prime mover nameplate rating.
The certificate holder is not permitted to operate or perform any repairs to the refrigeration plant, but is permitted to shut down the plant or initiate safety procedures when specifically trained and assigned to perform such tasks.

Ice Facility Operator
An Ice Facility Operator's certificate of qualification entitles the holder to operate an ice facility plant that:
does not exceed 1,000 kW prime mover nameplate rating; and
has a refrigeration operator or a fourth class power engineer as the chief engineer of the plant.
It is the WEEK 1 of the Refrigeration Operator’s course.
It is not an Inter-provincial certificate of competency but it is approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC), formerly known as the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) and conforms to their standards and syllabus.
This course is a requirement for personnel working in an Industrial Refrigeration Plant at various facilities such as Ice Arenas, Curling Clubs, Cold Storage Facilities, and Process Plants. This usually includes Maintenance persons, Zamboni drivers, and Arena Attendants.
Just as all other courses listed on this website, this course is a prerequisite to writing the TSBC exam.

Refrigeration Plant Operator
Formerly known as the 5th Class Power Engineer – Refrigeration Endorsement, this course is now referred to as a
Refrigeration Operator’s certificate.
It is an Inter-provincial certificate of competency approved by Technical Safety BC (TSBC), formerly known as the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) and conforms to the Standardization of Power Engineers Exam and Certification (SOPEEC) Syllabus.
This course is a requirement for personnel working in an Industrial Refrigeration Plant at various facilities such as Ice Arenas, Curling Clubs, Cold Storage Facilities, and Process Plants. This usually includes Maintenance persons, Zamboni drivers, and Arena Attendants.
A Refrigeration Operator's certificate of Competency entitles the holder to be a person in charge of any type and size of refrigeration plant.
